Insight into the Event Specialist EFZ apprenticeship

Habegger | 24 July 2024

As a training company, we take on two talented young individuals for the "Event Specialist EFZ" (Swiss certificate of proficiency) apprenticeship every year and show them the world of live communication. It fills us with pride and joy to be able to take on great responsibility for a very important stage in young people’s lives and to pass on our expertise to the next generation.

Thank you

Thank you for your commitment, your passion for the projects and your team spirit. Have fun and good luck for the rest of your apprenticeship.

) During the four-year “Event Specialist EFZ” apprenticeship at Habegger, the budding event technicians gain insights into many different areas and continuously acquire expertise. The apprentices from the respective apprenticeship years talk about their experiences, look back on their progress and talk about what Habegger means to them as a training company.

Ayel Dankner, first-year apprentice

Ayel is in his first year of training as an event specialist. He came into contact with live communication at an early age through his mother’s concerts.  With the expertise he has acquired, he now understands the processes backstage and can well imagine providing his mother with technical support during her performances.

His fascination is to inspire crowds – to create unforgettable moments. At the Seaside Festival 2023, the 16-year-old was allowed to operate the Following Light together with Kayo (also in his first year of training) and thus stir up magical feelings among the audience. “Creating experiences and emotions for eternity – that’s why I love my job.” In his first year, he has gained insights into all of the trades, with lighting being his favourite so far. Ayel is really looking forward to the upcoming intercompany course on lighting as he knows that he will be able to put his theoretical knowledge into practice. In these learning processes, he feels great support from his vocational trainer Gizmo, but the entire team of apprentices is also always at his side.

Luca Wermelinger, second-year apprentice

The budding event technician grew up in Baselland and completed a year’s language study programme in French-speaking Switzerland before starting his training. He has almost two years of training behind him and looks back over those years. He has learned a lot professionally in addition to the various types of projects, from corporate events to general meetings and festivals. He has already familiarised himself with the areas of lighting and audio, and he will be learning about video in the third year of his apprenticeship. “I was given more responsibility with each additional year of training. Habegger promotes young talents and we apprentices also feel that.” Independent work is a top priority at Habegger as a training company.  To this day, Luca has never regretted starting his apprenticeship in live communication. “It’s a unique feeling when I can put a smile on the faces of event visitors with my work.” The highlight of his training was Energy Star Night, where he was able to demonstrate his talent in broadcasting in addition to setting up and dismantling.

Munira Baumann, third-year apprentice

Munira is in her third year of her apprenticeship and is also studying for her vocational baccalaureate. As a break from these challenges, she enjoys attending festivals such as the Open Air St. Gallen or the Hive Air in her free time.

Her everyday life changed abruptly with her training at Habegger. The budding event specialist quickly learned how to organise herself and found herself in new places every week, whether in the Habegger partner locations or even in Berlin. The vocational school gives Munira another perspective on her training. She particularly appreciates the lessons from teachers who also work in the industry. “During my training, I gained a comprehensive insight into every area of event technology – sound, video and lighting technology, stage construction and rigging.”

Safety at events is also a major topic. The more knowledge and experience she acquires, the more responsibility she takes on and she is already planning small projects independently. Munira quickly realised that audio was her passion. She has a lot of exams coming up next year, including the IPA. “Many of us apprentices specialise in our preferred field at some point, which means we complement each other perfectly and have grown together as a unit. There’s no such thing as can’t,” says Munira about the team spirit at Habegger.

Luna Hügi, fourth-year apprentice

Luna will complete her four-year Event Specialist EFZ apprenticeship in summer 2024. She combines her passion for music and going to concerts with her job, as well as operating the mixing desks for bands she is friends with. She enjoys spending her free time in nature and also leads a scout troop.

“For me, it’s not just a job, but much more a passion. Even if it is sometimes very strenuous and the days are long, the projects are varied and the team spirit can always be felt.” Through the different types of events and clients, Luna has got to know many new places and people. “My highlight was a week in Paris at a major sporting event, which was an exciting experience.”

Over the four years, the budding event specialist has familiarised herself with a wide variety of trades such as lighting technology, sound technology, video technology and stage construction. Even at the end of her training, she is constantly discovering new things. The music-loving event technician has not yet decided on a specialisation, but lighting is her greatest passion to date. “A well thought-out lighting concept enables us to trigger emotions in the event participants.”
