Corporate Social Responsibility

Sustainability as an integral part of our everyday lives

For us, sustainability is not just an operational principle that governs the use of resources, but rather a guideline to ensure that the natural capacity for regeneration is maintained in the areas of ecology, economy and sociology. This principle is not only focussed on the present, but also on the future and is understood as an ongoing development process. It reflects our commitment to act in accordance with the needs of the current generation without neglecting the needs of future generations.

EXPO Event ISO 20121 – Sustainable Event Management

On 21 February 2024, we were certified with the “EXPO Event ISO 20121 Sustainable Event Management” label. This certification is based on the development of a comprehensive sustainability strategy and the targets and measures defined therein.

Why do we need a sustainability strategy?

The development and implementation of a sustainability strategy is of crucial importance. A sustainability strategy enables us to create long-term value, adapt to the challenges of the future and, at the same time, make a positive contribution to society and the environment.

Our 6 sustainability goals

Our 6 sustainability goals combine ecological, social and economic responsibility. They serve as a guideline for our commitment and our contribution to a sustainable future.

Our goals at a glance:

Our goals in detail:

Ressource management: We are becoming a circular company
Mobility & logistics: We are working to ensure that our vehicle fleet is as fossil-free as possible and that employees are strongly incentivised to make their own mobility fossil-free
Communication: We convey a congruent understanding of sustainability, both internally and externally
Social equity: We implement binding guidelines of social justice based on our values
Planning & concept: We primarily implement concepts that set economic, social and ecological standards and are recognisable as forward-looking projects
Catering & hospitality: We have a nationwide partner network that is defined according to total ecological costs

Great Place To Work

Since 2019, we have been taking a close look at our own working environment every two years together with “Great Place to Work®”.

We believe that a trust-based workplace culture makes the decisive difference to the success of a company. We believe that where the workplace culture of an organization stands out and excels, it enables greater innovation and value creation. Because where employees work in a trust-based workplace culture, they are happier and more motivated.

The principle of climate neutrality

Processes and products are termed “climate neutral” when their carbon emissions have been calculated and offset by supporting recognized carbon offset projects. In addition to avoidance and reduction, offsetting carbon emissions represents an important step in comprehensive climate protection.

Greenhouse gases like CO2 disperse uniformly throughout the atmosphere, which means the concentration of greenhouse gases is approximately the same all over the planet. Thus, the location on Earth where emissions are generated or saved is irrelevant when it comes to the global concentration of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect. That is why emissions that cannot be avoided locally can be mathematically offset at another location. This offset is realized through carbon offset projects.

Habegger – for climate neutral transport

Since 2018, all CO2 emissions from Habegger AG’s inland transports have been offset on a standard basis. Habegger is thereby taking responsibility and making a specific contribution towards climate protection.

Together, we support:

Plastic Bank Initiative: 10 kg of plastic out of the ocean collected for every tonne of CO2 offset

The ocean stores a quarter of the CO2 from the atmosphere and even 93 percent of the heat caused by the greenhouse effect – making it a major brake on climate change. Warming, overfishing, pollutants and waste endanger this balancing function. Over 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in the sea every year. Especially developing countries often lack infrastructure for proper waste disposal.

Several initiatives prevent plastic waste from entering the sea and contribute to improving the livelihoods of the local people – thus indirectly protecting the climate.

CO2 offsetting is done entirely through one of our following carbon offset projects, which are certified according to international standards. Every tonne of CO2 offset there, enables the Plastic Bank initiative to stop 10 kg of plastic waste before entering the ocean.

Solar energy for sustainable power generation in the Indian states of Maharastra, Orissa, Jharkhand, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh

A wind farm on the Philippine island of Luzon ensures an increasingly independent supply of clean electricity for the population.

And on the Caribbean island of Aruba, a wind farm provides a sustainable alternative to electricity from fossil fuels.

Contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • Goal 1: No Poverty – Members receive a fair & stable income for the plastic they collect. Plastic Bank pays additional incentives to further improve quality of life and access to life necessities.
  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger – Plastic Bank branches offer fresh food in exchange for collected plastic. Most of this food is locally sourced and carries high nutritional value.
  • Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being – Depending on location, members can redeem plastic for first aid kits, health insurance, or other needs. Removing plastic from water supplies helps to create cleaner living environments.
  • Goal 4: Quality Education – In Haiti, members can use plastic to pay for their child’s school tuition. A zero-tolerance policy on child labour is supported by Plastic Bank’s commitment to keep children in school.
  • Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Members can exchange plastic for clean drinking water. Corporate partners help to provide soap, shampoo and other sanitation products to the member communities. The removal of plastic from waterways reduces the toxicity of local water supplies.
  • Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – Members can exchange plastic for portable solar-powered lamps, which also serve as a powerbank that can charge phones and other electronics.
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Plastic Bank has created jobs for 2,300 collectors in the world’s poorest countries, enforcing strict policies to uphold labour and human rights. It seeks local partners to transport, process, and ship Social Plastic to inject maximum value into the local economy.
  • Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – In regions with a lack of waste management infrastructure, Plastic Bank connects shippers, plastics processors, freighters and builds a recycling circular economy.
  • Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities – Any adult in need can participate in the program. They can open a secure digital banking account – often the first bank account in their lifetime – that is safe from corruption or theft. This financial inclusion is key to bridging the gap between the developed world and the underserved.
  • Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Sustainable, circular economies replace the linear, wasteful models currently in place in developing regions. Redefining the waste strategies of these communities is key to unlock other forms of sustainable development.
  • Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Social Plastic is incorporated into the supply chains of multinational companies to reduce the demand for virgin plastic and alleviate the environmental effects related to plastic production. Consumers can identify the Social Plastic logo on product packaging to help guide responsible consumption choices.
  • Goal 13: Climate Action – Healthy oceans are vital to stabilising the climate; the wind park in the Philippines generates verified Gold Standard emission reductions.
  • Goal 14: Life below Water – By offsetting one tonne of CO2, 10 kg of plastic are collected. This corresponds to approx. 500 plastic bottles. In this way, the project protects marine life, microorganisms and endangered species.
